Scout and Guide, NCC and MCC for School Students

Scouting and Guiding, the National Cadet Corps and the Maharashtra Cadet Corps build discipline, fitness, leadership and service. Here is what each one involves, what their tests usually cover, and questions to practise.

Scouts and Guides

The Scout movement was started by Lord Baden-Powell in 1907 with an experimental camp on Brownsea Island in England. Its motto is “Be Prepared”. In India, school scouting and guiding is run by The Bharat Scouts and Guides, formed in 1950.

Younger children join as Cubs (boys) and Bulbuls (girls); older students join as Scouts (boys) and Guides (girls). Scouts and Guides progress through stages, each with its own test.

  • Pravesh (joining)
  • Pratham Sopan
  • Dwitiya Sopan
  • Tritiya Sopan
  • Rajya Puraskar (state award)
  • Rashtrapati Award (the highest award for Scouts and Guides)

National Cadet Corps (NCC)

The NCC was set up in 1948 and works under the Ministry of Defence. Its motto is “Unity and Discipline”. It has Army, Navy and Air Force wings.

School students join the Junior Division (boys) or Junior Wing (girls), usually from Class 8 onwards where the school has an NCC unit. Junior cadets can earn the NCC “A” certificate; the “B” and “C” certificates are for the Senior Division in college.

Maharashtra Cadet Corps (MCC)

The Maharashtra Cadet Corps is a cadet training programme of the Government of Maharashtra for school students. It focuses on discipline, physical fitness, drill, first aid, civic sense and love for the country, and is run by schools under the guidance of the education department.
